Quadro 4000 major issue in Mcpro
I installed a new Quadro 4000 2 weeks ago and have been experiencing ever increasing problems as time goes on. I’m at wits end trying to remedy the problem and hoping someone can provide some guidance, I just don’t know what to do anymore. Here is the sequence of events,
1. The first problem was losing sound from time to time but fixed that by trashing audio preferences and have not had problems since.
2. It takes much longer to startup I don’t get the chime for about 10 seconds for example
3. The initial problem was not getting the screen back after putting it to sleep, which I set for 15 minutes (I don’t use screen saver) and had to shut down via the power switch to get back up and running.
4. The mercury engine and rendering works fine with all processors pegged and all the allocated ram in use. Then I started getting the screen freezing up and had to resort to powering down to get things back on line. Thats when kernel reports started showing up and I sent off to Apple (no response yet and I expect them to point to the card anyway).
5. Now the screen freezes after about 20 seconds on initial startup and then I power down to get it back and things work fine and now FCP won’t launch but motion and the other Apps in the Studio do.
I realize this is a bizarre report but is there something I may have overlooked when I installed the card or are there any preferences I should trash. I have repaired disk permissions from the recovery disk and things worked well for a few days but now I’m back to the same routine.
The next step I’m dreading is to do a clean install but I’m not sure that will work and further I would have to put the ATI card back in as the cuda drivers have to go in before the card, I presume.
I’m hoping someone may have experienced something similar a big wish I know, else I’ll have accept the fact I just have a bad card. Any guidance would be more than welcome. Thanks

Don,
There is a possibility the card is bad. It’s extremely rare, but it’s possible. The most effective way to figure this out is to borrow or get another q4k and see if the problems recur.
Meanwhile, try uninstalling the drivers and re-installing them in “custom” mode – where you disable any add-ons (HDMI sound drivers; nview; 3D support) and install only the bare minimum. See if that helps.

To me this sounds like overheating – which means I would agree with Alex provided (small but) you’re keeping the system cool.
When we upgraded a workstation to the Quadro 4000, we noticed a marked increase in thermal output – this card runs hot at the best of times (i.e. at rest even!). Part of the reason it was so clear to us was that this particular workstation sits in a rack unit designed to silence equipment and the temperature readout went up by several degrees (causing the unit to work harder to keep the system at operating temperatures that were acceptable.)

The problem now is the CPU freezes every time I startup, after about 1 minute. I turned the activity monitor on to see if only the mouse and keyboard were disengaged but the whole thing is locked. I’v been speaking with a really good Apple rep and we are going thru a whole series of tests, I’ll let you know what we did and the results. Thanks. No heat problems.

I don’t know how to unistall nvidia drivers also I downloaded the driver package and cannot do a custom install and wouldn’t uninstalling the drivers affect the screen and stop everything.
I worked with Apple for quite awhile and we eventually went back to my ATI card and all was well, put the qd4 back and it all locks up after 1 minute no programs running it does it on its own. They reckon its the card but I’d like to try your recommendation first Thanks a lot..

That was a bad (not applicable) recommendation actually – what works for Windows, may not work for Mac. You’re right, a Mac system does go dark if you do manage to uninstall the drivers without first putting in a card for which the drivers are already loaded.
You did the right thing by swapping for a different graphics card; AFAIK there is no easy way to uninstall drivers in Mac OSX. Since the other card works fine, it’s much likelier now that your Q4K is bad.
Re-installing may work but I am not sure (don’t remember) if the OSX installation allows for “custom” mode like in Windows where you can uncheck the unnecessary components.
From the sound of it though, it’s the card. If you have another system to try it on (Mac or PC with a PCIe slot and 6-pin PCIe power), I’d do that. If it’s as flaky as on your main system – voila! It’s 100% the card then.

Yea, I’m going to send it in there is nothing left for me to do (no other platform), I just didn’t want to do that since its hard for me to believe its the card and if I get it back, well you can guess the rest. Thanks for your time Alex, I’ll let you know what happens.
