  Video Stutters While Scrubbing

  I’m another former FCP user just getting going on PP CS6. Love it, except when I scrub my video, either in the timeline or the source window, it stutters badly–making it difficult to find the shot I want.

  Before I start upgrading RAM, changing video cards, etc. I’d like some input from some of you veterans out there.

  It doesn’t seem to matter whether I view it in Full, 1/2 or 1/4 resolution.

  My System is:
  Mac Pro 2×2.66 Quad-Core Intel Xeon
  OS 10.6.8 (Have not move to Lion yet as I still have one FCP project on the machine)
  12 GB RAM–9 Assigned to Adobe Projects
  ATI Radeon HD 5870 Graphics Card
  My Media Drive is a Maxx Digital EVO-Plenty fast
  I am using AVC Intra footage and H.264 footage

  There is no way around it that I’ve found. AVC and H.264 are interframe codecs, your computer still needs to decode the frames around the frame you’re looking at and, when you’re scrubbing, that causes some lag in processing.

  I even have it to a varying degree on CS6 with Cuda acceleration, 32 gigs of ram, and an i7 2600 quad core processor. I will say that on 1/4th quality it is somewhat better, but not as perfect as when the footage is in an intermediate format.

  If you want a more pleasant experience, try transcoding to an intermediate codec like ProRes, Avid DNxHD, or Cineform. I know with Premiere, the use of an intermediate is a little passé but it still has its advantages in some regards. That’s my personal experience.
