  • Best practices for Premiere Media Cache files & database?

Posted by Richard Cooper on May 26, 2012 at 6:52 pm

Just looking for best practices when dealing with the locations for Media Cache files and the Media cache file database.

In the preferences>media tab, is it best to let the two locations default to the Adobe applications support folder on the OS drive? Or would you suggest a dedicated drive for all of these files?
Also, does checking the “Save media cache files next to originals when possible” override the media cache location setting? …and is this a good practice?

And finally, I have been working with the “Write XMP ID files on import” UN checked as it makes my XDCamEX BPAV folders un-readable with FCP log and transfer as well as XDCAM transfer, which at first was unacceptable… But now, I NEVER open FCP other than legacy projects and I am wondering if I should check this box. Does anyone know what this (and XMP data linking) actually does?

    Thanks for your insights.

The first thing I did was change the location.
Don’t want them on my system drive.

Thats interesting Ann. I have always operated with the Media Cache and Database files on my system drive (where it defaults) will no noticeable problems.
The one time I checked for them to be stored with the media on my external raid array I experienced some issues.

Bala, Todd confirms my choice in configuration…

1 – Media Drive – Media and Preview files (preferably a raid)

2 – System Drive – Operating system / software and media cache (PrP) and disk cache (AE)

3 – Final output drive – to export final movies.

Ann, you have posted a link to a rather lengthy thread. Is there any specific entry in that thread that has significance to our dialog here?

Well, my system rocks with my current configuration. I believe “if it aint broke, dont fix it”.

Besides, I takes everything Harm says with a grain of salt (and he knows it). 😉

Even if i never heard of Harm i would still do it.
Dont want anything else on my System disks then OS and programs.
Even with a fresh install of windows the first thing I do is relocate My Documents.
