Mac CS6 no Cuda / Open CL on supported laptop
Posted by Erik Mickelson on May 1, 2012 at 1:09 pmI have here a MacBook Pro 2.3 Ghz, 16GB Ram, Radeon 6750. I have downloaded the trial and am not getting a choice for Cuda/Mercury Hardware acceleration in the project settings. The drop-down is greyed out. I have automatic switching turned OFF in sys/prefs.
Anyone getting the drop down on a supported MacBook Pro? Is it all automagic?

May 1, 2012 at 2:26 pmIt looks like you need to be running Lion according to this list.

May 1, 2012 at 2:48 pmDo research or they will screw you yet again. You can get Lion ONLY by download. If you dont make a point of finding the process to access and make a copy of Lion, it will update your system but not leave the installer. The whole process takes about several hours depending on how fast you internet connection is. Its such a pain to redownload for archiving purposes, they will sell you a thumb drive with it for another $80. Do the research to saves the money.

May 1, 2012 at 2:56 pmHoly cr@p! Thanks Tom! I was just going to download/update direct, I’ll research and get my backup squared away.
Thanks again, you have somehow/probably saved me a full work day.
Now… off to hook up my non-supported Blu Ray to archive the system to a single disk…
I’ll report back with a mini review of CS6 Premiere Pro after the Lion update. I can say that the 3-way CC is MUCH smoother and responds better than the previous version, I can really bring the highlights up and it does NOT crunch and blow out, extremely well done! Unbelievable really.
Great job so far Adobe.

May 1, 2012 at 6:43 pmWell, not so good. That is the answer for Open CL acceleration on Macbook Pro. I “upgraded” to Lion and performance takes a serious hit. What I was able to preview in real time on Snow Leopard CS5 and “CS6 preview” is now dropping frames in Lion. Overall Lion seems to be a clunkier, slower interface than Snow Leopard.
Example:
Layer 2: 1 keyed actor with Ultra Key and Adobe 3-wat CC.
Layer 1: Background layer 200%, BCC Cartooner applied.
In Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and CS6 and “CS6 preview” the playback preview was in RT at full, occasionally dropped frames but caught up and back to RT. This is with Mercury Playback Software mode.In Lion and “CS6 preview”, Full Res, laggy timeline and constant frozen/dropped frames, dropped frames indicator solid yellow. At 1/2 res playback playhead goes for about 2-3 seconds and then drops frames, drop frame indicator then turns yellow for duration of preview. This is with Open CL hardware acceleration turned ON.
I realize that this is an unsupported trial release but it worked much better in Snow Leopard. Lets hope Adobe gets it together.

May 1, 2012 at 7:09 pmTake a look at my system below my signature. I am getting very smooth operation from this configuration. None of the anomalies you are mentioning Make sure that all the elements that support the Mercury Playback Engine are adequate. Your ram is rather low and I see no mention of a raid array. Of course graphic card support and fast processors round out the equation and not being a PC guy yet I cant speak to those.
You are running non-supported software, true, but it sounds like there are other issues going on.

May 1, 2012 at 7:34 pmI think the problem is MTS files. Searching the web, MTS seems to be the bane of Lion/Editing aps. I will keep going and give CS6 a run through before May 3rd(upgrade 10% off until then).
I do have a raid but thought I would see how all this Open CL hardware acceleration affects portable workflow. If it does indeed speed things up(does NOT appear to be true in my case) I could leave the raid at home for small/quickie jobs/video assist. CS6 just seems slower than CS5 from here.
Again, this is critiquing a pre-pre-release software and is not to be trusted!

May 1, 2012 at 9:10 pmThe acceleration from graphics cards (Open CL) is not a substitute for the fast read and write capabilities of a raid. The MPE relies on ram, CPU, graphics card and raid working in unison.

May 1, 2012 at 9:12 pmNope, NOT impressed with the performance of CS6 one bit. This is on my MacBook Pro with supported Open CL graphics card. MTS files are stuttering in playback. I round tripped to AE CS6 to use Keylight on an mts file, white background solid to make sure key is working.
Result: dropped frames all the way down to 1/4 quality. I even get dropped frames at Full after rendering the timeline. Nope NOT impressed at all with the promise of accelerated playback on my machine.
I do like the new feathered mask tool in AE. I do like the better 3-way CC in PPro. I do like the new Trimming tool(auto Ripple, Roll), seems like we can select discontigous clips and roll, nice.
