  Premier Pro viewing lut

  Hi,

  I’m currently in evaluation mode as we transition away from FCP 7.

  One regular workflow for me is to cut RED footage that has been trans-coded to a 1080p codec, e.g. ProRes 444.

  As we regularly grade the footage without conforming back the the R3D’s we use REDlog Film as it’s great to grade with.

  Our current workflow in FCP is to use a viewing lut for the editor, it’s actually just a plug in that applies a curve to make the log file look like REDColor 2.

  I haven’t been able to run down the equivalent solution for Premier. I’ve looked at Lut Buddy, but it looks like it’s designed to do rather the reverse of what I want, namely to pass along color information from within Premier to a grading app.

  To summarize, what I want is the ability for the editor to view a log based file in something that looks a bit more palatable (so to speak) 😉

  I’ll bet that some smart person on this forum has figured this out, and I’d appreciate some guidance.

  You might play with some of the Cineon converters, but AFAIK, there’s no RedLogFilm LUT yet for AE or PPro.

  The easiest solution is to apply MC Colorista II with an s-curve adjustment and possibly some saturation tweaks. This will be more than adequate for editing and is essentially the same as what you’d have to do in FCP7. Although there, you can apply the Nick Shaw RLF LUT.

  Assuming you continue to own FCP7, there’s another option. Import the PR4444/RLF files into FCP7. Apply the Shaw LUTs to the source clips and do a batch export as ProRes LT. Let the editor cut with these “dailies” in PPro. When the cut is locked, relink to the PR4444 media and send off to grading.

  Thank you very much.

  You’ve got it in one, I’m using Nick’s Antler plugin. (I got to work with Nick briefly in the UK last year, and he’s a very smart, very nice fellow)

  I’d rather avoid all the extra handling going the FCP route but I like your Colorista idea, and it so happens that we already own a license for Colorista II.

  I’ll give that a try, and thanks very much for the excellent idea.
