Autolaunch flash movie from CD
Posted by Vince Becquiot on April 29, 2006 at 9:00 pmHello Everyone,
Trusting that one of you AE experts will be able to make a recommendation.
I need to create a cd which would auto-launch a video inside a (Flash?) window,(Think “Total Training”). I currently have an uncompressed version of the edited video, so the final format is a wildcard.
I only need a couple of menu items as well, no submenu.Does anyone have any recommendation as far a authoring software goes ?
I am thinking flash based would be the most compatible.
Thanks,
Vince

April 29, 2006 at 9:10 pmI’d go flash based. The executable will work with or without flash installed. Encode to the on-2 codec flv. then use that in flash and make your interface.
If you need it to be cross platform (PC is easy) are you working on a mac or pc, if your on a pc you’ll need a program called “mac image” but that’s only to make mac compatible from a PC.
check out flashkit.com under the standalone forum.

April 29, 2006 at 9:32 pmThanks Andrew,
I am working on a PC, the video is just over an hour, originaly published to DVD. Are you saying that I have to create a separate video image for mac compatibility ? I am not too worried about that because that particular company has mostly PCs, but I would like that option if at all possible without sacrificing space, thus video quality.
Thanks again,
Vince

April 29, 2006 at 9:46 pmOne more thing, I have a ton of those videos to deal with (about 50) and I’m not really sure I want to mess with flash which I haven’t used in ages.
What about working directly with Flix altogether? If it will make things a lot easier/faster it might be worth a purchase. What do you think ?
How hard will it be to create an auto launch and decent menu within flash?
Thanks again,
Vince

April 30, 2006 at 8:25 amWhy not do this job as a simple DVD? DVD offers excellent quality, great cross-platform compatibility and easily allow for the level of interactivity you want. Cheap and dcecent tools include Sonic’s ReelDVD, Sony’s DVD Architect, and on the Mac DVDStudioPro is good. And there’s always Encore.
If you have to use Flash again after a long layoff, it will take you a little time to get back up to speed. And you’ll maybe need to think about the many users who don’t yet have Flash 8 installed, and how to help them to update … a lot of hassle for you if you just want to play them video with a couple of menus.
The big plus of Flash compression is for web delivery – great quality for the bandwidth. But DVD quality is still good – a well-encoded mpeg2 file for DVD at a decent data rate is going to look better than most highly-compressed files in whatever format.
Of course if you want web delivery and the ability to populate a menu with updatable choices , all at decent (for the web) quality, then Flash is a great answer.
If you do want to go the Flash way, this thread from the Flash forum may be of use to you. https://forums.creativecow.net/cgi-bin/new_read_post.cgi?forumid=190&postid=857614&pview=t#head

April 30, 2006 at 10:33 amAlthough on re-reading your posts I see you say the video was originally published to DVD. I was wondering what might be the reason for wanting to make a specifically CDROM version …?

May 1, 2006 at 4:44 amHi Mike,
Well this is a client request. It has to do with many employees not having DVD players on their computers or laptop (I guess their IT guy hasn’t been convincing enough). To be honest, I haven’t argued about being asked for more work on that project even if I am getting headaches after watching these presentations so many times 😉
Anyway, if I use a projector flash file, they won’t need to have flash installed, which, to me sounds like the best way to make it hassle free. I am still working on that and a leats I am getting somewhere…
I have exported the project from AE to .flv and am now working in Flash 8 to create a presentation opening.
Still strying to figure out how to make the darn thing auto-launch. And I wonder how many cups of coffee one can drink before one gets in trouble… 20?
