    Hi there,

Slightly unusual request from our client – they want us to drop an oversized book/magazine on an actor – so it ‘flattens’ him. We are filming this in a white cyclorama studio – and my intention was to do something like the Andrew Kramer car scene but from a vertical perspective – i.e. mock up the actor falling down, as if the book had hit him, then perhaps dropping the book in a separate shot and then composite the two. What do you think?

I am also getting the book made up (4′ x 3′) as a prop though – for the final shot where the book is placed on top of the actor. The printing company who are making this, say it will be pretty heavy but will be v realistic. I would therefore prefer not to drop the book afterwards (for the composite) – and like to simply use some kinda of digital image to initally drop from the sky. Does anyone have any suggestions of what shape/image would be best to give a sense of it being 3D? Plus I dont want to really drop the prop, so our client can use it as a marketing tool afterwards – if it isnt damaged.

    Hope you can help

    Xavier

These things are often shot with a high-speed film camera or done in a real 3D app.

Think about how it would bounce if it were heavy.

Hey, test as Dave says, right now, with a book, a desk and your video camera. See what it looks like.

This is probably something I should know. What the heck is cyclorama? I’ve never even heard of it…

Thanks for suggestions. I have tried some tests – with a digital image of a book and composited it on some footage of me falling over like an idiot. It doesnt look too bad and I am thinking this might be the best way of doing it. I also tried dropping a normal sized book – and as you say it was very quick and there was no way I was even going to try and rotascope it. So I might stick with the graphic option. Cheers boys!
