  Still images

  Hi,

  I’m creating videos for web delivery that are primarily made up of still images. I’m using a Canon 5d2 camera, shooting raw, and importing into Lightroom. I want to use full size images in PP (not reduced to framesize) so I can pan and zoom. I’ve had some success but haven’t yet figured out the best workflow for this. Any suggestions? Some questions:

  * Best file format:I’m doing image editing in LR. I tried selecting 7 images and exporting them as PS layers (so I could import into PP as a PS sequence) but the resulting file is close to a gigabyte. This doesn’t seem workable for large numbers of images. Would high-quality jpeg work well so long as I don’t zoom over 100%? Or would TIFF be better?

  * Software: I know how to set keyframes and interpolation in PP… but should I consider using AE?

  * motion blur: should I use motion blur or frame blending to smooth out zooms and pans? Can I do these within PP?

  1. 100% JPEG is fine. I’m not sure what you gain from zooming in further than 100 percent with full sized image files; of course it’s going to break up into pixels eventually regardless of compression at high magnification

  2. Use After Effects. I’m sure there are plenty of prebuilt scripts to get your images into a slide show format, and the program is just better suited to move layers or a virtual camera than Premiere Pro is.

  3. Use motion blur, not frame blending. Use it in After Effects and consider feathering the start and stops of your pans and zooms to make them feel more natural.

  It sounds like you have a relatively good handle on AE and PPro, but if you’re not sure on certain things, feel free to follow up.

  Thanks a lot. I’m a still photographer with some Final Cut experience who just switched to Production Premium. I feel like I’ve got a good handle on Premiere but still shaky on AE. Your reply helps convince me I need to jump into AE with both feet.

  So my tentative plan is to edit raw images in Lightroom, then export the ones I want to use in videos at highest jpeg quality, fullsize.

  Next I can either:

  1. Import the jpegs into PP, place them in a sequence, then choose “Replace with AE composition” to edit them in AE; OR

  2. Import them into AE, put into compositions, add effects, then import the compositions into PP.

  Is one way better than the other?

  I do have one other question. Experts like Rich Harrington and Chrish Meyer say that to pan and zoom, always keyframe the anchor point and not position. If this is so, then for what purposes would someone want/need to keyframe position?
