  Jerky footage in CS4

  I am running an i7 processor with 4gb of ram and two massive hard drives. My OS is windows 7.

  I am running Premiere Pro CS4.

  I have a Toshiba Camileo hd30 camcorder. This is a relitively inexpensive unit mabe £140. However, my problem is due to its price there is are not many options when it comes to changing what it shoots. These are FHD 1080p 30fps, HD 720 30fps, WVGA 60fps and VGA 43. all of these seem to be AVI format. i have only tried the 1080p 30fps in Prem Pro CS4 and the video is poor. it will move for about 2 or 3 frames and then stop, however the audio is still running. I usually use a panasonic using AVCHD and that plays footage no problem. but i am stuck on this.

  Your Toshiba uses the h.264 codec in an AVI container… the problem is AVI is old and h.264 isn’t super compatible with the container so it’s prone to breakage (like you’re seeing in playback).

  Grab MPEG Streamclip (https://www.squared5.com) and try re-wrapping your files in MP4 or MOV. You aren’t converting the actual footage, just taking it out of the AVI and sticking it in a different “box” so it should be a quick fix to run on your footage as a troubleshooting step in your workflow.
