I’ve been editing an HD project in Premiere CS5 on a PC computer. I now want to export the video and hand off to another technician to apply some color correcting to. He is on a Mac/Avid system. I want to keep the version I give to him as pristine as possible.

I’m editing in an AVCHD sequence because some original footage for this project was shot in that format – but the video mainly contains high res still images and some archival SD footage that’s been incorporated.

What’s the best export setting to create a file to give to him? Should I pull the entire project into a different type of sequence? (Does the fact that I’m editing in an ACVHD sequence affect my options for how I export the file?) Again, there is a limited amount of AVCHD footage in the project… its mostly stills. Ultimately, after color correcting on his Mac/Avid system it will be rendered into BluRay format, but for now my issue is just getting him the best file possible to do the color correcting.

    Any help is much appreciated.

I would go for MOV with the JPEG2000 codec at 100% quality if you have nothing else.

Alternatively you can use Avid’s intermediate codec which is similar to ProRes in terms of size and quality. You just need to install the codec on each computer. Since he’s an Avid user, he’ll probably love you.

Thanks, I’ll give that a shot. To be clear though, I do have something else – I have all of the thousands of the options and permutations within the adobe media encoder… and it’s fairly confusing to me, obviously. At this stage I’m most concerned with exporting a video file to minimize any quality loss due to compression. If someone with CS5 on a PC has done this specific thing on what is essentially an HD photo montage, your input it highly desired.

    Thanks.

I think the previous suggestion is a good one. DNxHD might be what you need as the best compromise between quality, amount of data and the ability to share easily with someone editing on an Avid system.

For no quality loss the other option is uncompressed but that could end up being rather heavy with 1080p30 10-bit YUV coming it at about 10GB/min (165.72 MB/sec).

You’re passing the file off for color correction in Avid? You might try exporting an AAF from Premiere Pro and see if he can import it on the Avid/Mac side. Otherwise, he’s going to have to create an add edit for every cut in your piece in his editing program before color correction. Every individual clip needs a separate treatment. And that won’t be too pretty.
