October 5, 2011 at 5:01 amIn my experience some lag is normal when switching back to Premiere. On larger projects it may take about 10 seconds for it to kick back in on my system. I don’t know why it does this but I suspect it has to do with Premiere reclaiming memory for use.
I would experiment by adjusting “RAM Reserved For Other Applications” under Edit > Preferences > Memory to see if you can strike some sort of balance.
This is only a guess.

October 6, 2011 at 4:29 amIs this with Premiere Pro CS5 or CS5.5?
There was a bug in Premiere Pro CS5 that caused this behavior in some cases, but it was fixed in CS5.5.
The bug was related to the fact that information was being written to disk during applicaiton switching and aggressive firewall software was delaying the writes as it monitored them for illicit activity.
Avast was especially bad about triggering this.
Try disabling you antivirus/security software (when disconnected from the Internet, of course) and see if the problem persists.
Also, make sure that you’re reserving plenty of RAM for other applications, so you don’t have the problem of RAM contents being swapped to disk every time you switch applications.
Finally, I strongly recommend using another computer for things like poker. I have a crummy laptop next to my primary workstation for things like email and a web browser. One of the crucial recommendations for keeping performance high is to not slow your computer down with things other than your video software.

February 24, 2012 at 5:47 pmTodd, I can categorically assure you that this problem has not been fixed in CS5.5 – not on the Mac at least.
I am running P Pro CS5.5 on a macpro 3, 1 with a quadro 4000 card and 14gigs of RAM under Mac OSx 10.6.8 and am having this problem all the time.
Its driving me crazy. I am in the middle of experimenting with hw much RAM is allocated to other applications but it has not worked out yet.
All the best

February 24, 2012 at 6:23 pmMark, I can tell you that I have just about the same setup as you and I have NEVER had this problem. Just so you have a point of comparison. 😀

February 24, 2012 at 6:47 pmThat’s interesting Tom
What speed are your processors and how much of your ram have you got allocated to other applications?
I notice you are using a raid wheras I have my file sitting on one of the four internal drives do you think that would make a difference?
Cheers

February 24, 2012 at 7:03 pmMark, I have 2 3.2 processors. My Maxx Digital raid tests at 745 MB/sec. for 1080 media. I am running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. I know a lot of the newer machines complain of lag but most machines from our time frame (2008) don’t seem to manifest this problem. I know a fast raid is a key component is enabling the Mecury Engine to perform well. As are lots of ram, a CUDA card and fast processors. I must admit, your situation is a bit confusing.
Can you elaborate on exactly what your performance issues are?

February 24, 2012 at 8:16 pmHi again.
My processors are 2.8 GHz and I am editing h.264 footage at 1280 by 720.
When I first open P Pro CS5.5 and then every time I switch windows (say to answer an email) and then back to P Pro, There is a lag of anywhere between 2 and 20 seconds between me pressing the play button or spacebar and the clip actually starting to play.
I have experimented with allocating more ram to other applications (currently I have 7Gig for P Pro and 7Gig for everything else) but that has made no difference.
Strangely, if I click on the monitors icon in the apple menu bar at the top of my screen, that will often trigger the clip to start playing – no idea why.
I have recently made the switch from FCP7 and I am having quite a hard time learning to like P Pro but this issue is making it really hard to stick with P Pro.
It is encouraging to hear that you have such a similar system but without this issue. I wonder what the difference is that is making the issue happen on my system but not yours?

February 24, 2012 at 9:00 pmSome questions…
What operating system are you running?
Do you have the most current drivers for your Nvidia card (both Nvidia 4000 and CUDA drivers)?
Have your tried trashing your pres and Repairing your permissions recently?
What kind of raid are you running. Down from AJA their system tester to see what performance you are getting.
Run a memory test to see if you have any bad sticks.
