I wonder if anyone is able to suggest VBRs/format choices to produce the best online video streaming according to length.

I have come to prefer MPEG4-h264, but I want to put the best looking video online, but have limited server space.

I just did a 23 minute mp40-h264 vid at VBR, 1 Pass,Target,M3.00 Max 6.00 Mbps which produced a file size of 536,203,514. How can I create a smaller file with relatively comparable and reasonable quality. These folks “like” mp4 (as I do), rather than flash. I just did F4V which looks pretty good and produced a file size of 274,929,894 (progressive) VBR, 1 Pass,Target 1.50 MBPS,Max 2.00 Mbps

The other 2 vids are 5 minutes each, so I think mp4-h264 will produce manageable sizes and good quality. (Original source is avi.)

But of course another consideration is what player people are likely to have.

Much to learn, and thanks for your help.

    Hi William,

3 to 6 Mb/s pretty high for standard streaming. Many people are still on 1 Mb/s connections out there.

3-6 Mb/s is more often used when you are doing scalable streaming where the speed changes according to a user’s connection speed.

At this point in time, I would keep the bit rate under 1.5 Mb/s and in VRR 2 pass. At the end of your post you mention “player”, which tells me that you may not be talking about streaming but download?

H.264 is pretty much it right now when it comes to compatibility with either streaming or download. There are different encoders out there, but better quality and price aren’t exactly linear.
