  Import Cut Points (EDL)?

  I’d like to use After Effects for a music video i’m editing on my Avid Xpress 4.6 PC system. My FX friends told me I’d have to manually create adjustment layers and apply the color correction filters onto each layer. I’m new to this sort of process/workflow.

  Do I have to create an individual adjustment layers for each shot (e.g. ~200+ layers for the music video)? Do I manually have to adjust the length to make sure it encompasses the entire shot? To save time, am I able to export some sort of data file (e.g. EDL) from my Avid, import it into After Effects, and AFX will automatically create the required number of layers?

  Yep, each shot is a layer, so you’ll have 200+ layers.

  However:
  1) An adjustment layer affects all layers below. So if you want to affect more than one layer at a time, you can create an adjustment layer that sits over more than one layer. But if cuts 1-5 need blue coorection, then 6 needs red correction, you’ll need to create a new adjustment layer.
  2) Don’t jump to using adjustment layers just yet. It’s better to apply the CC effects directly to a specific layer, then save as a preset (under the animation menu) so you can apply it again to another layer if need be. Or you apply the preset again, then tweak it.

  Adjustment layers are specialized: only for applying an effect to every layer below it. Too many new users try to use them unnecessarily.

  To do the EDL thing, you’ll need Automatic Duck.
