AI file delinks from AE comp imported w/Dynamic Link
Hi,
An After Effects comp I imported to Premiere using Dynamic Link keeps dropping the link to an Illustrator file. The comp includes a JPEG, AE solids/text, and the AI file, which I imported to AE the same way as the JPEG (double click Project Panel).My work computer chokes w/both Premiere & After Effects running, so I have to close AE when I’m not actively using it. That’s where the problem starts (& why I assume this is kind of a stupid question…).
After closing AE, the Dynamic Link Comps remain visible in Premiere except for the linked Illustrator file. I figured it uses some “headless” After Effects process, because the rest of the comp shows up fine. All other layers & animation show up & play but the AI file is gone.
When I restart AE, I have to manually reload missing layers of the AI file. What’s weird is it’s not always the entire file that goes missing, but sometimes just individual layers! :\ ?
Had the same problem last week & thought I’d fixed it by “replacing” footage in AE, but apparently not. It’s not a large file – maybe 10 layers, only 8MB. It’s in the same folder as the JPEG that shows up just fine, and there are no changes to file name or location. The connection just gets corrupted somehow.
Anybody have any idea how to fix this? Is there a better approach to Dynamic Link I should be using (awaiting new computer & RAM upgrade, but in the meantime…)
I’m running CS5 Master Collection on Win 7 64-bit.

Have you applied the updates to After Effects? There are some bug fixes for Illustrator files in the updates for After Effects CS5.

Yes, as far as I know everything seems to be up to date – not CS5.5 though. Running Premiere 5.0.3 and AE 10.0.2.4. (Can’t run Updater manually to check due to IT policy…).Replacing the file with an identical one stored elsewhere didn’t make a difference (thought maybe the path was too long, but I’m on 64-bit, so I didn’t think that mattered as much anymore…?).
I also tried importing another simpler AI file & it actually stays linked! So I guess it’s more a problem w/the specific AI file than with Premiere or Dynamic Link.
I looked again & it’s a 23MB file. I wouldn’t think that would be too much for programs designed to work w/HD video, but I suppose it is enough to choke it somehow. Can’t imagine that’s a common issue though – I’m sure people often use Illustrator files that are much more complex than mine. Oh well.

This does sound like a bug to me… I might ask the IT people to allow you to venture out long enough to do the updates that the system is due for if there are any first.
The only other workaround I can think of might be to take the illustrator files and make 3-3 layer files instead of one 9 layer file? It’s more work up front with a slight reduction in aggravation later…unless you need to revise the graphics of course (sigh).
Is it the number of layers?…or the complexity? Is there a common thread you can see in the layers that seem to go AWOL?

I’ll see about getting the updater run & will give the multiple-file approach a shot.The only common thread w/the layers that sometimes show up is that there’s no space or underscore in the layer name. I’ll try renaming them all to use just a single “camel-case” word & see if that helps.
One of the layers that sometimes makes an appearance is in fact the most complex layer in the whole file, which is kind of surprising. The rest are single closed-path shapes w/gradient fills. …Though they ARE LivePaint groups too – wonder if that matters. Hmm…
