PP file management-maintenance
Hello All,
Again, forgive the newbie question–I’m still trying to get out of “Avid think” after many years. What is the best practices method for file maintenance or management in Premiere Pro? I realize all media is linked to source files.
In Avid land, I created Avid media files for all imported media. Then, if disc space is an issue, I can back up and delete source files at will. The real issue in my workflow is in areas like imported Photoshop graphics and audio files. These are small files that reside nicely in folders on our network, out of everyone’s way. Do I now need to make all relevant media to a project localized on my Adobe box just to be safe and have an efficient workflow? Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions!

Premiere has a Project Manager, that will copy any used media (or media imported into bins, but not necessarily in a sequence) and move them to a new location with a copy of the project file. I perform this operation every time I’m finished with a project (or feel it needs to be backed up at any point). Depending on the source material, you can choose to have Premiere trim the material as well (this does not work with P2-sourced footage), with heads and tails. I generally don’t do this, but the option is there.
There’s a file-size calculator as well, which tells you how much space you’ll be eating up, based on the selections you’ve made (for instance, you can choose to only include media from one specific sequence in a project, and tell it to dump all other sequences and related media).
