    Hello All,

    I believe I have read every post here about bad render quality coming out of Adobe Premiere (Media Encoder). Some things I tried and some were irrelevant. Here we go:

    I am unable to get a decent render in ANY format.

    System:
    CS4
    Win 7 Home Premium
    MB: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. X58A-UD3R
    CPU: 3.10 gigahertz Intel Core i7 950
    16384 Megabytes Usable Installed Memory
    One 0 Raid array (2tb)
    Separate System Drive
    Separate Project File Drive
    Separate Page File
    Separate Source File Drive
    Other storage drives
    (All drives 7200 RPM 16/32 cache)
    Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 470
    1400W power supply

    I started on this machine for some quick projects with Sony Vegas trial and it rendered extremely well. I switched to my CS4 and have rendered complex sequences (all prerendered) and simple ones in every combination I can come up with: QT, h.264, AVI, MPEG and WMV. All in the size and frame rate of the native video/animations. Everything looks bad. The video is not smooth, scene movement is distorted, animations jumpy or skip frames, dissolves the same. Overall, the quality looks like bad VHS!

    I’ve played back Vegas rendered files and they are fine. I’ve run those through Media Encoder to rerender with the same settings and they become degraded too.

    I’ve looked at my codecs (used GSpot 2.70a for individual files and InstalledCodec for a complete list) but don’t really know a lot about those. Nothing stands out as weird.

    I loaded a spare hard drive with Win7 and nothing but ADOBE and still I have the same bad results. (The codecs list on that drive with much smaller but that didn’t seem to make a difference.)

    Here is the caveat: My EVGA NVIDIA GTX470 graphics card crashes a lot. I’ve talked to EVGA and tried their suggestions with no luck. The crash is an unresponsive driver shutting it down (my screen fills with colorful sparkles). The crash has never happened during a render. Only while working in Premiere or After Effects.

    Another post I read about the quality of rendering relying on the graphics card said the card doesn’t impact rendering. I am not so sure of that. The card–along with the rest of the hardware–is the only constant in this since I have the same problem on a fresh install.

    Help! I am three days late on a project that goes to broadcast on Monday. Could it be the graphics card? Am I missing something else?

    What is the SOURCE video format/resolution/frame rate? Like “HDV 1080i 29.97” for instance.

    What are you exporting to?

    Any time you export for the web (or any computer playback), you want to make sure the result is deinterlaced, or “progressive”. If you are starting with an interlaced format and export as interlaced, it will not look good for playback on a computer screen.

    Thanks for the time in reading a replying. I have tried rendering out in all of the formats/wrappers/codecs mentioned above. Some for YouTube, some for broadcast (see below) and some for Cincopia. Except for a project in which I used After Effects to create a sequence of video of different sizes and sources, all of mine are 1280×720 with video cap from my JVC HD110. I usually shoot progressive and render progressive. My goal is to get something superb with the following specs required by the cable company these spots will air on:

    THIS:
    H.264
    45 Mbps – (CBR)
    1080i – 29.97
    720P – 59.94
    Default
    16:9
    1920×1080 (1080i) or
    1280x720P (720p)
    4:2:2
    1080i (Upper/Top Field First)
    720P (progressive)

    OR THIS:
    MPEG-2 Transport Stream
    45 Mbps – (CBR)
    1080i – 29.97
    720P – 59.94
    Long GOP (IBBP)
    16:9
    1920×1080 (1080i) or
    1280x720P (720p)
    4:2:2(HP@HL)
    1080i (Upper/Top Field First)
    720P (progressive)

    It was during these variations I discovered the problem. I run dual monitors and also have a 720p TV i look at these from PC playback. I’ve also tried these players: Windows Media, Real and DIVX. (Chrome for the FLV>)

    I did fail to mention that FLV renders fine.

    This is all too weird and frustrating… 🙂

    Could it be hardware?

    Did you try rendering out with the MPE in software only mode?

    Hi Jon,

    (Great YouTube channel!)

    I have CS4 so no Mercury Playback Engine. I did try the numerous setting combinations available in the NVIDIA driver software. I found one combination of software/hardware that seemed to make a small difference. I did find this though: https://forums.adobe.com/message/2960719

    It appears the GTX470 may not work well with CS4 though. At least the posts died off with our any resolution.

    I’m going to get a new graphics card and hope that makes the difference.
