I am learning my way around Premiere Pro (after editing in FCP for years). I have a superbasic question: When I am making an “extract edit” in the timeline, the playhead doesn’t snap to the position of the cut, but stays at the same place in the timeline, while the clips are cut and move to the left of the playhead. Now, if I want to review the cut, I have to move the playhead to the cut and play from there. (When you make an extract edit in a Final Cut Pro timeline, the playhead would snap to the cut after the extraction of the material.)

I am not sure if this is a setting in the preferences or if it simply is clumsy programming.

Does anyone have the same issue or knows how to fix it?

    Hi Enno,

Yes this is a problem, which has been corrected in CS5.5

It can be annoying at the least knowing how it “should” work in a logical way, especially coming from FCP.

However there is now way around it until you get CS5.5 or later.

What I did to lessen the pain, what hit my in and out points then hit Q key to jump the playhead to the in point in the timeline, then hit ” key to extract and it would be ready to play as it does in FCP and now CS5.5

Sweet, that works. It’s silly that I need a workaround like that to do a simple edit, but I should stop the whining, because I imagine it’ll become a habit to press the Q key after doing it 50 times.

It’s almost like it’s magnetic!! Uh, hold on, that was something else…

    Thanks 🙂

So what’s the solution in 5.5? Coming from FCP, my playhead always snaps to the closest cut or beginning/end of clip.

Sorry if I don’t quite understand your question…

PPro CS5.5 now places the playhead at the newly created edit point when using the extract function.
[placing in and out markers on the timeline and hitting the extract button in the program monitor or shortcut key ‘ with active track/s, the content from the gap between the in out markers is stored in the clipboard for pasting and the gap left behind is automatically ripple deleted. In previous versions of PPro the playhead stayed where it was in the timeline just before the extract was performed. FCP didn’t have this issue and it has been adjusted to match FCP since PPro CS5.5]

Is there another part to your question I’m missing?
