  Premiere Crashing under CPU load

  I’m having severe problems with Premiere CS5.0.3 crashing in projects with a lot of processing. Specifically, I’m trying to preview a sequence with lots of hi-res images, overlayed. Now, I know that Premiere won’t be able to play it back at full FPS, but I wouldn’t expect it to crash under load, just jerk and stutter. I sometimes work in projects with lots of large images, and just expect to render them out, or see jerky playback while I’m doing the innitial edit. But Premiere isn’t degrading gracefully, it’s crashing.

  I tried dissabling GPU Accelleration, since I have a GTX460 which isn’t TECHNICALLY a supported card (though most have claimed that it works fine). But dissabling it didn’t make a difference either. Sometimes it even crashes when I try to render, or even click on one frame!

  This doesn’t happen in less intensive projects however.

  Any thoughts? It really shouldn’t be doing this, and it’s a problem.

  Several possibilities: it’s (1) a bug in Pr itself, (2) system-related, (3) poisoned Pr preferences.

  First thing I’d do:
  1. Copy a short portion of the timeline onto a new project, possibly different preset, see if the problem(s) recur.
  2. Trash Pr preferences.
  3. If the above does’t offer any clues, ask your Adobe SI, or anyone else to duplicate that short project on their CS5 system, see if the problem(s) recur. If they don’t, then it could be system related, and not necessarily Pr problem.

  I figured it out!

  I had put the AfterEffects “Lens Blur” effect on one of the background tracks. Whenever I install Premiere, I always copy over all my AfterEffects plugins, because there are some that work well in Premiere (though less since it went 64bit). Lens Blur is vastly superior to Premiere’s “Camera Blur”, but it’s a CPU hog… and I guess, crashes Premiere. This isn’t surprising, I think I remember it crashing CS3.

  Anyway, case closed!
