CS4 PC and Mac Integration and FCP
Just got off a big project that started on a PC CS4 Premier. A mix of HDV, miniDV, photos and stock, VHS and DVD rips were combined into five 7 minute videos. The footage which as uploaded many different ways on the PC was a mix of mpeg DV and avi. All five videos were built in a single Premier Project.
Client brought project to us to load up on our Mac CS4 to work with the client in our edit bay. First thing we did was convert all the footage to ProRes. We also broke up the five videos so each had its own project file.
Few things didn’t work. Some Effects built in the Mac Premier did not go across into AfterEffects. For some reason none of the projects could be sent out of Premier into the Encoder so the only way to get a self contained file to encode on the Mac for review was to open a sequence in AE and render it out.
None of the audio mix settings (levels, panning) went over to AE either.
So the only solution was to playback the Premier sequence out of the Kona card live to another edit bay as it captured it, then encode from there. We actually ended up doing this on all segments and reassembled them in FCP for final output and encoding to DVD and BluRay.
this was not a great workflow. What I would have done differently is upload all the footage on the Mac to ProRes then give those clips to the client to edit on the PC Premier. Would have specified to make each sequence its own project.
Too bad PCs cannot create or upload to ProRes files.
Nonetheless it was a long haul and learned a lot about the limitations of Premier and going cross platform when the project has multiple sources and lots of various codecs.
