Converting 5d files to work in cs3
I am running Adobe Premiere Pro cs3. I have footage that was shot on a cannon 5d. The footage is 1920 x 1080 24fps. I think the cannon files are H.264 with quicktime wrapper. I can import the file into Premier but the files have to be rendered.
I have tried NeoScene and it will convert the files to .avi but they still need to render once imported into premier.
Is there a way to convert the files so they do not have to be rendered?

For PPro CS3, you’d also have to specify what sort of timeline you’re running.
You could go to XDCamHD EX using MPEG Stream…or you could use an intermediate codec like CineForm.
You need to decide what format you want to edit in (is the rest of the project shot as something else?…or is it all DSLR?) …and convert to that.

The footage is all DSLR. I have not defined a timeline yet. I will adjust project settings to best fit the 5d footage and maintain the highest level of quality possible. I just need some type of work flow direction that works. How and what program to use to convert the 5d files so I do not have to render the files in cs3 before cutting the project.

Do you mean use MPEG Stream Clip to convert to a clip that is compatible with a XDCamHD EX Seqeucne in PPro?

Unfortunately, yes… It wouldn’t be ideal as you’d give up some image quality (4:2:2 to 4:2:0…50 Mbit to 35 Mbit), but PPro CS3 does not have the format options that CS5 does. DVCProHD is sub-raster…the options available that won’t require a purchase of some type aren’t that appealing.
CineForm is probably the best way to preserve quality and edit without constant rendering.
The codec is very fast, and very high quality. (though I’m not sure they officially support CS3 any more…you’re 2 versions…probably getting close to 3 versions off of the current release.)

One way to tackle the problem with Premiere CS3 and footage from a Canon VDSLR is to transcode the footage with MPEGStreamclip into the free AVID DNxHD codec (with the corresponding settings) and then edit with an “XDCAM EX 1080p” preset.
Works for me quite fine.

I was really struggling and your suggestion works very well.If you have any other suggestions for workflow solutions with DSLR video footage and Premiere CS3 I’d be interested to hear. I’m yet to venture into making a Blu-Ray disc! 🙂
