I am getting a skipping, or a short freeze, on mpeg-2 files rendered through AME. I am playing these back in Windows Media Player and VLC. Rendering Uncompressed or matching the sequence settings (Matrox avi) work fine. I have even taken the rendered Uncompressed files and rendered to mpeg-2 and still got the skip happening.

This is on SD 720×480 material rendered to mpg for stations and archive. I’ve changed from constant bit rate (10mbps) to variable (9mbps target). Even tried the automatic GOP placement and maximum bit depth. This doesn’t happen on every render, and when it does I switch from constant bit rate to variable and that will sometimes clean it up and sometimes just move where the skip happens. I will also use Windows Media Encoder to encode wmv from it and it the wmv file will have the same issue. Although, the mpeg-2 file, when imported into PPro again, will usually play fine.

I recently re-installed Adobe Prod Prem and the problem still happens. My specs are plenty good enough to be able to play the files: Win 7 64 bit, Adobe Prod Prem CS5, 2 x 3.33 Ghz XEON hex cores, 24 GB RAM, Quadro4000, playing off fast 700MBps external RAID.

If changing from constant bit rate to variable doesn’t work, I usually end up having to adjust bit rates up or down until I get a render that works. Kind of a pain in the arse. I didn’t see any resolution from the earlier post I was reading, so I hope that with my info we can come up with something. Any ideas? Just because the mpeg-2 will play fine back into PPro, I can’t rely that it will play fine when it gets to the TV stations…
    Thanks for any help! TC

I’m unclear. Are you mucking with the Preview settings (which are technically Renders) or are you talking about the export Media choice in the file menu?

No. I’m referring to AME – adjusting the bit rates in AME to get a clean render (SD material at about 9 or 10 mbps, most stations want around 10-12).
From PPro I Ctl-M (Export-Media) to AME (I usually don’t have previews, so I don’t use them when rendering – so much is real-time on this system I don’t need to render previews).
Like I posted though, I’ve taken a file that was exported to an Uncompressed avi file and tried to render out an mpeg-2 using AME and had the same results. I don’t know if it is AME itself or the mpeg-2 component causing the issue, but getting a clean mpeg-2 (as a .mpg) render is sometimes difficult.
