Premiere Pro in a Shared Storage Workgroup Environment
Hi all,
I’m a long-time Avid MC user considering a move to PPro CS5. Can any of you offer insight, warnings and/or tales of success in setting up PPro in a shared workgroup environment, possibly from those who have moved from Avid to Adobe?
We’re running a small workgroup of 5 editors currently on Avid MC and Unity. I’ve done a bit of work with Premiere Pro in the past, but always in a single user environment. What pitfalls can I expect with PPro utilizing shared projects?

What portions are you and arent you sharing? Premiere Pro CS5 isn’t designed for a shared environment… I would think it’s 2 versions away.
What that said, here is what I would store on a shared drive:
– The Footage and other assets (At this point I’m assuming a RAID10)
– Go to Edit > Preferences > Media. Click “Save Media Cache Near Originals”. Premiere writes an XMP “fingerprint” on footage to match its cache files. If you conform on one system, you may be able to skip the initial conform on other systems.. even though conforming is relatively fast.I would not plan on saving project files on the shared drive as Premiere can’t do merged saves or versioning.

I was hoping to share both the project files and footage, though I suspected that may be problematic. I guess I’m hoping that someone in the PPro community has a workflow that’s worked for their group that doesn’t involve sneaker net’ing a stack of external drives from one suite to another. As it stands, our current flow involves a great deal of passing projects from room to room and editors bouncing from project to project. With our production process, I have a tough time imagining projects being limited to single users.
Can I assume placing project files in shared storage would work as long as they were not accessed simultaneously? I’ve read that project files on network drives break the dynamic links to footage, though this was in reference to an earlier version of PPro(2.0 I believe).

Brad, you are right in assuming that storing project files on a shared network is fine as long as you do not simultaneously access them.
As far as the dynamic link bug with network storage, I’m not aware of any shortcomings, but you may want to head over to Adobe’s official forum as a few more Adobe employee are floating around there who could be of service for this answer.
I would think as far as human management, I would split editing between rough cut and master cutting or assign different scenes to each editor. That, however, is your prerogative.
