Premiere Pro and Transcoding
Hello! My name is Alley and I’ve been using FCP Studios for about four years and I’v recently begun working with Adobe because of my work has requested I start learning how to use it. I’ve been looking at some tutorials and as I start learning more about other programs and as I start learning more about even FCP- I realize that there’s a whole crap load of stuff I don’t know about. I’m doing research on my own but I know there are a lot of professionals on here that probably started off in the same position I am now and might be able to but into a newby’s terms what I’m asking.
My first question is about transcoding. Is it the same thing as compressing? If not what’s the difference? Also. I saw a tutorial where Adobe Premier can import high quality footage without transcoding and then make a sequence matching the format of the footage. But there’s still a yellow line saying it needs some rendering. I know in FCP after log and transferring your footage and setting the sequence to match your footage, you don’t need to render. Does this have anything to do with FCP transcoding while Premiere doesn’t?
I’ll probably post more questions but for now that’s the only one I have. I’m still researching it too- I have a two days where I don’t have any work to do so I’m spending it extending my limited knowledge. I would love some answers from tech guru’s here!

Transcoding means to change media from one format to a another. This may or may not entail compressing, depending on the formats. Compressing, by definition, means to make the resulting file size smaller. You can transcode without compressing.
A yellow bar in Premiere indicates an unrendered section that may or may not need to be rendered to achieve realtime playback…depending on your system specs.
FCP transcodes(renders) non-native media to a native format during Log and Transfer.
