  Premiere 4.2.1 and AVC-Intra Footage

  QuickTime AVC-Intra 50M 1080p 24/30 1480×1080

  I have listed my machine type, Premiere version and footage type above. I am trying to import footage that was shot on a Panasonic P2 camera into Premiere 4.2.1 from an external hard drive. This footage was captured in Final Cut Pro 7 and sent to me. Premiere 4.2.1 is supposed to support this format. However, I am getting an error message stating that the “Codec missing or unavailable.” Quicktime will not play the files either. “Get info” in QuickTime lists the format shown above for these files. I have also tried to import these files into FCP 6.0.6 and get an error message about format being unsupported as well. After Effects will not open them either. Please help! My client is getting impatient.

  Hi Michael,

  I don’t think Premiere CS4 ever fully supported AVCIntra, even though it was listed as a preset, unless it came late in the game as an update.

  In your case, you are dealing with a wrapped Quicktime file, and no longer native AVCIntra. I would first take a look here and see if the QT to AVCIntra transcoder is able to convert the footage for you. Tjen import it into Premiere again.

  Otherwise, you will likely need to find someone with a copy of FCP and convert to a format supported by Premiere. QT Animation, QT Motion Jpe, QT PNG…

  Your question is confusing…you’ll need t clarify a few things.

  First, I hope you mean “Premiere Pro CS4 v4.2.1” because Premiere 4.2 is about a 13 year old program.

  Second, as far as I know, AVC Intra is square pixel, period… 1920×1080. The 50 Mbit drops to 4:2:0 from the 4:2:2 in the 100 Mbit variety, but it’s always full raster.

  Third, DvCProHD runs non-square raster of 1440×1080 at 25fps (the 1480 framesize you quote doesn’t fit with any format I’ve ever heard of…), but for 24/29.97, it’s framesize is 1280×1080.

  Last, you description of this footage and it’s path needs clarification… what P2 camera? Captured into what version of PPro? Imported into FCP as what? Exported from FCP as what? (Specifics on all these settings are necessary as what you have in your original post isn’t technically helpful…or, I suspect, completely accurate.)
