Exported video colors seem dull, low saturation….suggestions

My videos are from a Canon 5D MK2 working in Priemere Pro CS5 in the monitor window the colors, contrast and saturation looks great, even in the export media window everything looks great. If I export to H.264 Viemo HD settings, my file looks flat low contrast low saturation when played in QT10 even if I publish to Vimeo online it looks lifeless. I’ve tried a few other export flavors and they all seem to be about the same.

    I’m on a MacPro 12 core 12gb ram
    OS 10.6.5
    CS5 Priemer Pro
    QT 10

    Thanks
    Mark

Have you tried nesting your sequence in another timeline and applying an additional layer of CC to see what that looks like compressed?

Perhaps you need to overcompensate for the compression to dial in your final look?

    Just a thought…

The H.264 is in a QT wrapper…if you have a friend with a Windows machine, I’d take it to them and have them play the file in Windows Media Player and see what it looks like relative to QT Player.

It sounds like the gamma issues with QT may be alive and well…I know that the H264 files I create with QTPro end up looking very washed out, but when I play them in Windows Media Player, the colors are great.

That, and QT also has a tendency to just loose a full stop of light when you encode with it…

    Dear Tim,

Thanks for your very useful post.

I indeed have the same issue as Mark. I think you are right, the problem probably lies in the difference of gamma of QT. I have no way of checking that because Windows Media Player would not play my MEPG 4 Movie file.

Anyway, may I ask you: do you have any idea of how to solve this issue (I am actually producing a film for Mac so I need it to work with QT)?

I recall the same experience as you had when working with Final Cut once (very washed out) and the trick was to change the gama in Final Cut.

Any idea on how to solve this issue with Premiere Pro, ie make the rendered video file’s colors same as the one I m seeing inside Premiere Pro?

I cannot see any setting related to gama in the Export Setting window.. any other solution?

Your thougths will be most welcomed!

    Thanks a lot in advance

    Martin

    Dear Tim,

I sent you an earlier question but meanwhile I think I found a solution

It’s indeed a question of discrepancy of gamma between Quicktime and Premiere Pro.

The solution can be found at

    Hope it helps
