  • CS5 Still Export – Wrong PAR

I have been playing with Premiere Pro CS5’s new still export feature in the Monitor windows which being someone who often exports stills from video thought it sounded like great feature. It has been driving me mad though as 16:9 footage exports as 4:3. When doing it through the media encoder you can specify the pixel aspect ratio but you don’t seem to be able to do that with this new method. I have done a few searches on google and read the adobe help guide but nothing. If anyone has a solution for me I would really appreciate it as it really would speed up my work flow a lot.

    Thanks

    Hi Adam,

As far as I know, the export PAR will always follow that of your sequence. Of course, that can be changed in Photoshop, but yes, that would be a bit pointless.

What format are you editing? DVCProHD? HDV?

The video I was using was an MP4 (h.264) I had exported, its just what was available on my laptop. I tried an AVCHD MTS file recorded on my AX2000 and the still was exported perfectly. Not sure why the MP4 file didn’t work properly as it is 16:9, but anyway it’s AVCHD I shoot almost everything with which works fine – this is such a great feature, really going to save me a lot of time.

    Thanks for your help.

That’s odd. The video is square pixel, isn’t it?

I have no idea where he wrong PAR would be coming from…

What is the resolution of the exported still if you re-import it?

Is it the same size when you open it in Photoshop?

As mentioned, Pixel Aspect comes into play, and stills assume 1.0 PAR when being displayed. HDV for instance uses a 1.333 PAR, with 1440×1080 resolution. An exported still will look like 4:3 – take it into Photoshop and change the size to 1920×1080 and it then looks correct (at 1.0 PAR).
