Export to P2
I’m working in Premiere Pro CS5, exporting sequences around 30-45 seconds in length to a P2 (Panasonic AG-HPG20 in “USB Device” mode). Works just fine, but the process is really slow. Looking at an hour or more. Is this typical? Everything has already been rendered in the sequence.

Have you tried the device coupled as a FW peripheral?
…also are you exporting AVC-Intra, or DVCPHD?
Writing back to a P2 card is a great convenience, but it’s definitely easiest when the card is in a local PCMCIA slot.
I seem to think that the architecture of the cards tends to make cards of larger capacity write a bit faster…what is the capacity of the cards you’re writing to?
Exporting P2 DVCPHD should be a piece of cake…it’s VERY fast in my experience. I have less experience exporting to AVC-Intra however.

Thanks for your response. I guess I’m not sure on your first couple questions. I’ve only used the P2 recorder as a “USB Device” – what is FW periphal? And I’m not familiar with AVC-Intra. I’ve been exporting as P2 Media, which I believe is using the DVCPro codec.
I’ve been using a 32 GB card to write to. I have an HP EliteBook 8740 with an Express Card slot – is there a converter I can get that would allow me to treat it as a PCMCIA slot?
Thanks for any feedback on this. Still new to Premiere so I’m not sure what to expect – but I really like the P2 functionality. Even though it’s taken hours on the output side, the final clips playback just fine.

FW= FireWire
I think that device has a FireWire port as well…I’m curious whether that might be a bit faster.
I know that several colleagues of mine have used the Duel Systems Express 34 to PCMCIA adapter (I’m sure there must be others available as well) with P2 cards pretty successfully and you’re moving data across the PCI-X bus instead of USB…

Haven’t tried the Firewire connection, but it’s a good thought. I’ll see what happens. Same with AVC-Intra. And thanks for the feedback on the Express card adapter. Ultimately, I’m betting that’s the way I need to go.

Tim – just reading that the Duel Systems Express 34 to PCMCIA adapter may not be compatible with Windows 7. Do you know anyone that is using an adapter that does work with Windows 7?

Most people I know who use it are on Macs (I’m on Windows myself, but I’m a Sony/SxS guy for the most part).
