Best virtual sets
Posted by Neil Myers on November 17, 2010 at 2:47 amWe are doing a end of year prediction video for a client (their predictions about the year to come). We’re shooting green screen in HD and are looking for a good virtual set that looks professional. What are some good sources.
We definitely don’t want the cheesy $29 stuff that I have found so far on the web that looks amateurish. We don’t mind investing in a high quality library.
Suggestions?

November 19, 2010 at 2:49 amHi Neil,
Good luck on that search. For the most part, the stuff you see that looks good is custom designed, and of course, very expensive. I have yet to see something royalty free software based stuff that I find realistic.
On the other hand, if you are willing to get dirty and animate it all yourself, you could look at Turbosquid and other similar 3D site, the stuff is fairly cheap and many of them actually look pretty good.

June 26, 2012 at 7:17 pmI know this is an old thread but that is some amazing work. How long did it take to build it.

June 27, 2012 at 5:48 amThanks! It took about 3 days.
Here is a more recent one that took much longer but is kind of fun …

It is a three-part video for a trade show.

June 27, 2012 at 5:52 amI need to build a set for a project I am working on, what did you guys use to complete the set?

June 27, 2012 at 3:22 pmIt was done in 3D Studio Max, After Effects with 2D artwork done in Illustrator and Photoshop. Keying of the footage and compositing was done in AE. Editing was done in Final Cut, but only because this particular editor was (at the time) committed exclusively to that platform. We have since won him over to Premier. 🙂

June 27, 2012 at 5:35 pmDo all of the monitors have alpha channels and do you guys sell that set?

Neil Myers
June 28, 2012 at 2:30 pmIt wasn’t really made for outside use. The AE files are massively layered. It isn’t alpha channel, just layers composited in.
So, short answer, it is not for sale (only because it would take forever to explain how it works).
