Black video doesn’t render in CS5!
Any time I render out black video in Premiere, my chosen playback software holds the frame before the black video is supposed to appear, and doesn’t actually show the black video. This happens with every format and codec. I want 5 seconds of black video and all I get is the previous non-black frame frozen on loop for those 5 seconds.
I’m running my student copy of CS5 Production Premium, which is up to date even though the Encoder loves to whine at me saying it isn’t — it is.
What gives? 🙁

Create a New > Color Matte and make it black, or use a black still image from Photoshop and see what happens

Thanks for the Encoder fix, but my black video still doesn’t appear even with a black matte.

Sounds like it could be a graphics card driver issue.
Did it work before and recently stopped or has it always had this issue?
What kind of video card and driver version are you working with?

nVidia GTX 280 with Forceware 258.96. I don’t understand how it could be a video driver issue though, because other people’s videos with black frames play just fine?

At this point I’d say we need some specifics:
What sort of footage are you using? (Framesize, codec, framerate, etc.)
What sort of sequence do you have? (As above…give the settings)
How are you creating the black and placing it on the timeline? (What video track…are you dissolving or fading it in with opacity or a hard take…give the details.)
What are the export settings you’re using? (Same drill…)
And finally…what is your “media player of choice” and have you tried other players with the media in question, or tested a different output format with your chosen player?
Let’s start with the basic troubleshooting and go from there…

1080p Desktop square pixel, Lagarith lossless RGB compression or the Fraps proprietary codec, 25 fps.

Sequence is 1080p, square pixel, 25fps, 44.1khz.

I am either trying to cut to black video or a black matte, or I am trying to cut to no video track in the section of the timeline. Either way I get the same effect.

Just about every combination – MP4, Quicktime H.264, WMV, etc., in both Media Encoder and directly from Premiere. Someone mentioned unchecking “optimize stills” but this hasn’t helped.
I notice that the same freeze frame effect happens in the Output window of the Export panel so that I can see the wrong result before spending time rendering it.

WMP, Quicktime Pro, and VLC; I check my video in all 3.

well…have you tried some other codecs? Something like DV or DVCProHD?
Shareware codecs can sometimes simply have some little hack or modification that simply throws some specific application off…
Does the Lagarith or Fraps material transcode into something else? Maybe that would get around whatever the hangup is…
I’m not very knowledgeable on the vast landscape of shareware codecs I’m afraid. They are prone to the same possible problems that any shareware application is…someone can afford to write them but testing them in every possible use is simply quality control that is impossible to do for free.

Interestingly this issue seems to have resolved itself. I pulled the troublesome video track back and forth a few times in the timeline, and to my surprised it began rendering correctly. Some bug in Premiere Pro perhaps? I have no clue… anyway, thanks.

I’d guess the codec had a frame it was hanging on…this problem seems media-based.
I’d transcode the media for future use as a media player will play back lots of less than well structured media, but an editor needs to access it at a different level.
As I said, there are lots of free codecs out there but it’s tough to do the quality control on them when you’re already doing the coding for free.
If you can reproduce the problem with any mainstream, professional codec like XDcamHD, DVCProHD, DV, HDV, etc, then I’d look at Premiere Pro, but this problem was weird…I’d say you may want to report back to the codec folks what the problem was…
