We use Adobe Premiere Pro CS5. Currently we have a software-based RAID 0 system inside our PCs. We want to switch to RAID 5 or 10 and I have a couple questions for the experts:

    1. Any suggestion on 5 versus 10? I am leaning towards 5 for safety reasons.

    2. Any suggestions on the best way to attach the RAID system? eSATA, USB 3.0, Firewire 800? Which would be best, or is there an even better way?

    3. Any suggestions on which product to consider for the external RAID system?

    4. We currently are getting about 51MB/sec average transfer rate from our internal drives. Min is 41MB/sec. What should be be shooting for in terms of speed? We do mostly 1080P, typically two video layers and up to 6 audio tracks.

Any and all advice warmly accepted!

    Thanks.

Here is a link to bit rate requirements that should guide you on the number of drives needed and RAID type.

The best is off course what you can afford. On the lower end of prices, we’ve been very happy with these.

A this time, I would recommend eSATA for compatibility/price.

Thank you for the recommendation. We ordered their TowerRaid 8-bay system with a 4-channel eSATA PCI-E card. We’re going to run RAID 10. The speed tests I have seen are really good … 334MB/sec … and we still have good data protection.

Did you buy that box, and if so, how do you like it? We’re thinking of getting one.
