  Advice for an FCP user considering switching!

  Hi, I’m an FCP user who has just purchased Premiere Pro CS5 for Mac because I needed Encore for a Blu-ray project. I’ve just spent the day playing with PPro and I have to say I’m liking it a lot. I use mainly XDCam HD and EX for our projects and I’m very impressed with the workflow, so I’m considering switching some of our projects to it.

  Are there any other FCP users/switchers out there who can give me the lowdown on the main advantages of Premiere over FCP and any “gotchas” I should look out for when using it. I do know Premiere from the days before it became “Pro” (Still have nightmares about Premiere 5.1 and Matrox Digisuite!)

  I started off with Media Composer then FCP now PPro. They’re basically the same. What I like about PPro is you set your timeline for the video you are using and just drop it in. Any other formats can be dropped in on that timeline and PPro will make it work.

  Exporting and Encore is a breeze. Blu-ray discs look awesome. Making menus in Encore is very easy, with a quick link to Photoshop.

  One thing is to get the max memory you computer will take. PPro uses a lot.

  Two particular areas worth noting is that the sequences in PPro are not based on a video format per se…but a frame size/PAR. Whatever media is on the machine that there is a decoder for can be dropped on any timeline and seen immediately, but if you had 1080p XDcamEX, DSLR, and AVCHD all at the same framerate (and I’ve even mixed framerates), it all plays because the sequence is not based on a particular decoder.

  Also…if I shoot 720p60 overcrank on my EX1, I simply load it into my 1080p project, right-click on it to re-interpret the framerate at 24 fps, and go… The clip will come up as a red line when I scale it(indicating rendering is needed to maintain framerate), but that’s all there is to that.

  …so, two areas you might find interesting.

  (ok…a third…you might want to try switching your sequence to “audio units” and see what editing audio -by the sample- on the video timeline is like…remove a click or pop and don’t even fill the hole as it’s too small to hear anyway. Also…splicing music beds is sooooo easy.)
