    I am ready to scrap this computer and buy a mac. I am trying to edit a 4 camera project in multi-camera mode. The problem I’m having is that it renders fine but playback is jittery. I’ve tried to playback on the timeline itself and it obviously plays better than in multi-camera monitor, which hardly moves. I had it working better when I tried different locations of the cache files and scratch files, which I am a bit confused about. One set, the cache files are located under edit -> preferences -> Media. The other set are the scratch files located under Project->Scratch Files. My questions:

    1) Can someone fill me in on where I should locate these files on my system? I’ll give specs after I ask the questions.

    2) What should I set my Windows Virtual Disk to?

    3) After a lot of testing, I set my system up to use two drives as raid 0 for speed. A third drive is non-raid. This did not help at all. In fact, I think it made it made my system more unstable.

    Ok, here are my system specs:
    Actually, they will be in the post following this.

    There’s some information on setting up scratch disks here.

    Okay, Each time I move the scratch files, I get results. Not the most optimal results but I think that this might be the key to get me going. Here’s my setup:

    3 1 TB drives
    C: Windows and premier Pro
    E: This is an empty disk that I can use that is raid 0 with C:
    F: Contains my raw video files, Non-raid

    Consider the following and note my questions (WHERE….?) with relation to my setup above.

    In Premier Pro
    Edit->Preferences->Media
    Media Cache Files (WHERE SHOULD I PUT THESE?)
    Media Cache Database (WHERE SHOULD I PUT THESE)
    Project->Scratch Disks
    Captured Video (WHERE SHOULD I PUT THESE?)
    Captured Audio (WHERE SHOULD I PUT THESE?)
    Video Previews (WHERE?)
    Audio Previews (WHERE?)

    Thanks for the help!

    In Premier Pro, consider the following:

    Project->Scratch Disks
    Captured Video
    Captured Audio
    Video Preview
    Audio Preview

    I have my footage on it’s own disk. Should I point “Captured Video” folder to where I have my raw video? Is that the idea? I didn’t capture anything. Everything will be imported to the project.

    Same with audio. I recorded separate audio and have that in a different location. Or I could create a folder on the same disk as my footage and store it there. Should I point the “Capture Audio” folder at my raw audio folder?

    Regarding Video Preview and Audio Preview: Should I have these on separate hard drives? To recap:

    c: Windows and CS4 Premier Pro
    D: Raw Footage, Set “Captured Video” to this disk.
    This disk will also contain audio that I recorded, set “Captured Audio” to this disk.
    E: Video Preview and Audio Preview: This disk is an empty disk. Should I set “Video Preview” and “Audio Preview” locations to this disk? This will disk will contain only my preview files.

    Am I thinking about this correctly?

    Thanks

    Tim

    E: This is an empty disk that I can use that is raid 0 with C:

    If you stripped Drive C and E together as Raid 0, you should have only one drive letter that represents this, not an empty disc E. Your operating system does not need to be on the Raid 0 setup, but your source files (raw video) should be. Proper Raid setup does make a difference.

    Thanks for your input. I may need to start from scratch again, reinstall windows etc.. Your comments focused on the raid set up. I need that info as well. Thank you. However, would you mind addressing the following so I know that I’m thinking about this correctly. I need to understand what’s going on with the file so I can make some educated decisions:

    Be sure and read Tod’s Adobe info. I put all of the source files (captured video, other video, audio, photos, etc.) for a particular project on my fastest drive – the raid. I also direct my scratch and cache files there. I want the fastest access and playback to any file that I will be using while editing this project. I backup all files to a separate drive, and save all projects to both the raid and the backup drive.
