Full screen video previews (not making a panel full screen)
I really cant believe I have to ask this, but I’ve been googling and reading the manual for about 2 hours now and I cant for the life of me figure out how to playback a sequence at full screen. I might be missing something very obvious. Forgive me if thats the case.
Everything I’m reading says use the tilda key (ie ~), but all that does is make the preview panel full screen. Thats not what I want, I want Premiere to take over my screen and play back my 1080p footage using my laptop’s whole monitor. Just like if I played back a video file in full screen in quicktime, windows media, VLC, etc. I can’t show clients edits with the grey border of the program’s UI wrapped around my footage!
There must be a solution here, I really cant imagine Adobe releasing Premiere without this feature? Its standard in every other piece of NLE software I’ve used …
Any help is really appreciated!

Highlight the sequence you’re working on, go to the Sequence Menu, select Sequence Settings, then click the Playback Settings button (top right of this new window). Now, next to the words “External Device” select a monitor, and it should immediately go black when you hit OK. At this point, the monitor you selected will play back full screen video of the Program Monitor. I use this setup in a 3 monitor configuration, and it works very well.
If you mean replacing the current view of a single monitor setup (such as a laptop), I’m not sure if that’s possible.

Thanks guys. Unfortunately I’m not talking about making it full screen on a second monitor, I was hopeing it would be possible to play it back full screen on my single (laptop’s) monitor.
Its been a feature in FCP for ages and I assumed that with Adobe playing catchup for so long they would have included this fair basic feature.

Full screen playback on your single monitor without any additional icons or playback controls is not possible.
This was an old feature of Premiere 4.2 and its variants. During those days the option for full screen playback was done via your CRT monitor which is patched to a VTR deck. The audio out of the computer and the CRT monitor with full screen playback enable is connected to a VTR deck (VHS). Crude way to output to tape and very buggy.
Fast forward to today, if you want full screen you connect the firewire to your A/D Converter then attach the composite out to your monitor.

I’ve been experiencing sort of the reverse of this issue… I’m working with two monitors, and one keeps sporadically turning into a fullscreen playback monitor, without me wanting it to!
Chris Knight provided the solution:
Preferences > Playback > Video Device
Make sure no “Video Devices” turned onOne of my monitors was checked on here.
