I’ve got to render a h.264 quicktime from a windows machine and am having all kinds of trouble. I can’t even get a single frame to render before I get the error message:

After Effects error;compressing frame of movie — QuickTime codec error (-8960)

I’ve tried different frame sizes and with and without audio. The machine i’m working on today does not have qtPro installed. I don’t know if that is required for this codec to render and I can’t take the movie into QT and render there.

Any ideas would be appreciated. I may just have to render animation qt’s and take them home to render tonight on my mac.

h.264 requires information on rendered frames in order to work well. These frames allow the encoder to group frames into packets for enhanced compression to ensure a smaller filesize and bitrate.

The -8960 error message seems to be an error that occurs due to non-conformity to expected screen ratios that a CODEC works in.

You will do better by rendering to the Animation CODEC and then using QTPro for the h.264 encoding.
