Digitizing MiniDV
Hey folks,
I typically edit in HDV with Adobe Premiere CS3, running on Vista. I need to digitize some older footage on miniDV, so I’m using a Canon HV30 as a player. I’m trying to digitize into a standard-def DV project, but Premiere will not recognize the camera when it splaying the DV tape. (Never had that problem before; it always digitized from HV30 with no problem, but I’ve only done HDV in the past.)
I’ve tried setting the camera output to DV LOCK to ensure its sending out a DV signal, but nothing. Even on DV LOCK the display on the camera says HDV/DV, so not sure if there’s something going on with that.
I’ve also tried different firewire cables with no change. And again, when I test digitize HDV in an HDV project, no problem at all. Its something with the DV. Any suggestions?

You need to make sure the capture interface settings are set to DV and not HDV as the signal is translated differently and needs to be changed in order to ingest it.

Like Jon said you need to make sure all settings reflect DV, with the cam in the play mode you should see “DV” in the top center of the LCD display you, if not goto the Play/out menu and select Playback STD = DV, make sure the firewire is disconnected when you do this or turn the cam on/off after you select the setting otherwise it wouldn’t switch correctly, if it still doesn’t work goto the device manager and see if a “Imaging Device” listing appears when you switch the cam on, if it doesn’t and the cam appears in the “sound video and game controller” section of the device manager you may need to find a IEEE1394 driver that more closely matchs the firewire chipset.

Thanks for the thoughts. I should have mentioned that I have checked to make sure DV Capture is selected on the Capture menu, so that’s not it. Also, I select DV LOCKED on the camera playback STD before the cable is plugged it. Once it’s plugged in, the DV OUTPUT item on the camera menu is grayed out, and I still have HDV/DV on the camera display. (When I unplug again, it still seems to be DV LOCKED.)
And the camera is identified as an image device. Any other ideas? Thanks a ton for all your help.

Have you tried it without the lock, and disconnect and select DV from the menu (Playback STD = DV)
