Premiere Pro 2 — Directsound error
Hi all – I just reinstalled PPro 2 after a complete reformat of my PC. When I try to open Premiere Pro 2 I get an error message that says:
“Your sound card driver for not support directsound input” then the program freezes.
I have never had this issue before. I downloaded the latest Realtek hi def drivers, checked for any conflicts in the PC, found none. I also use Vegas and there are NO problems…it happens only with PP2. Went on the Adobe site, found a post stating that PP2 has it’s own “wrapper directsound” driver and to go INTO the program and change settings…well and good except that after the error message, if I attempt to open PP2 it freezes everything and I need a cold reboot. It is a fresh install so I doubt there are corruption issues. This only happened since I switched to Windows 7 64bit….but then again it worked before the reformat too so I’m at a total loss. Can anyone please help me resolve this matter. It’s quite urgent.

Hi Gary,
My first thought is that CS2 was built way before Win7 / Vista, especially in a 64 bit environment. There is no way to guarantee compatibility there.

Thanks for the input. When I first bought my current PC, PP2 worked without a glitch. Nothing has been changed other than updated audio drivers and a new reformat a few days ago, and as I mentioned in my 1st post, apparently Adobe installs a wrapper audio to make it compatible with a variety of sound cards or drivers, so I can’t figure out why, when it work fine, it now does not.
Odd, at least to me, that I have not found any on the adobe forum or in their knowledge base about this issue. Obviously there are other people using premiere pro 2 with Windows 7, 64 bit.
This problem literally makes using PP2 impossible. There has to be a fix.

You don’t mention what version of win7 64 you are using, like Vince mentioned, Ppro2 was out along time before vista/win7, you can try rolling back your audio drivers to the ones you used previously, also if you have win7pro/ultimate you can try setting the xp compatibility mode via the “program compatibility troubleshooter”, if you have 7 homeprem you can try to set the compatibility mode going to the Ppro directory and right clicking on the Ppro exe file then select “troubleshoot compatibility”, or you can select properties, then the Compatibility tab and then the compatibility mode check box will allow access the the various modes available in the menu dropdown.

Hi – I’m using win 7 home premium. I tried every one of your suggestions with compatibility modes, etc., also rolled back drivers and none of it allowed PP2 to boot past the error message about directsound drivers. Trying the troubleshooting mode I get a message that PP2 is “incompatible” …however, it worked perfectly until I did a reformat a few days ago. The audio drivers are the only change that was made, so assuming that was at least part of the issue, I uninstalled the Realtek drivers, installed the older ones and it still does not work. I am wondering if something in the registry is either corrupt or….dunno.
I cannot find any fixes re the message “sound card driver does not support directsound input”…. I really hope someone out there can help me resolve this problem. Thank you all! – Gary

When you put win7 on you system was it a upgrade version from a different OS?

Hi – The Win7 (version home premium) was pre-installed on my new PC.
In the few days since I posted this problem, I have found no fix or workaround. I have tried all the suggestions made and have continued troubleshooting…but there is a finite limit apparently. I still can’t imagine that I’m the only person who has run into this.
Obviously, I’m at a standstill and unable to use PP2 so I really hope someone has an answer as to what is going on.

PPro2 is not supported by Windows 7 32-bit or 64-bit. I doubt even if you get the audio issue resolved that you would be able to edit and export properly anyway.
PPro2 was not even certified for Vista 32-bit or 64-bit. It was made for WinXP 32-bit only.
You can’t push a square peg into a round hole.
Sorry, but you will need to upgrade to either CS4 or CS5. If your OS is not 64-bit then you only have 1 option = CS4. CS5 is 64-bit only!
