Crop tool. Cannot find
Posted by Ed Stevens on April 4, 2006 at 7:05 pmAfter effetcs 7 on MAC. I cna’t find the crop tool. I’m not talking about the crop to an area. I want to crop the edges off a certain clip that will be moved over other clips.

April 4, 2006 at 7:26 pmUmm … I don’t think there ever was a crop tool. Try selecting the layer, then double-clicking on the rectangular mask tool, then hitting MM to show mask properties, then decreasing the mask expansion to crop in.

April 4, 2006 at 7:39 pmThere is now, at least for AE 6.5. I don’t know whether it works with Ver. 7.0. Profound Effects gives it away, and I’ve found it extremely useful:

April 4, 2006 at 8:41 pmPersonally, it’s due to my coming from AE by way of Combustion. You didn’t have to make a mask (yes, I know how easy it is)in Combustion, and it just made more sense to the workflow. When you’re looking at an image on a timeline and you need to make it smaller you think “crop”, not “mask”; at least I do. Otherwise, there’s probably no difference, although there may be a difference in the order crop gets put into the AE workflow.

April 4, 2006 at 8:48 pmIndeed — it may also suit editors more, or allow you to apply stroke to an unaltered mask (maybe), or work with independent numeric sliders instead of a visual mask-drag thing.
It looks as if you can also tie expressions to it in a limited fashion, which you can’t do with masks unless you try to find Brezhnev Shu’s plugs.
I think.
