Problems with HD editing..
Hi, like the subject says my problem is editing HD clips with Premiere Pro CS4. I tried first with Canon 7D files, the playback both in the project window and the timeline is horrible, it is not possible to have more than a 1-2 seconds of smooth playback! Today I tried with some EX1 footage, it is much better , but still after maybe 6-7 seconds it starts stuttering lightly, still a huge improvement over the 7D files, so I guess it has something to do with the 7D files? I recently bought a new pc, my stats are:
– Windows XP
– AMD Phenom X4
– 4 GB RAM
– 500 Serial ATA
– ATI Radeon HD 5700 SeriesIsn’t this enough for HD editing? If not, could someone post their computer stats which would faciliate smooth HD editing?
Any comments or help would be appreciated!

Hi Rainer,
The DSLR clips use H.264 compression, which takes a lot of power to decode for playback. A few helpful tips to improve editing –
1) Always use a dedicated hard drive for video editing, do not put video clips on the C: drive. Add a second SATA drive and keep video clips and projects there.
2) Move to a 64-bit OS, like Windows 7, to improve system performance. The 64-bit OS will also allow you to add more RAM.
3) Using an intermediate codec will lessen the demands on the system, providing smoother playback. Check out the Cineform NeoScene codec for under $100, there is a free trial version. This converts the hard-to-edit Canon clips to a much more edit-friendly codec (without visual quality loss).
4) Adobe CS5 offers better performance for the Canon clips, but does require the 64-bit OS first and loves extra memory also. If you just add a hard drive and NeoScene, this may suit your needs for now.
