Tell your boss: ” I want Boris Continuum Complete v.4.0! ”

Of course, he’ll say that’s Boris’ too much expensive.

Now, tell your boss: ” Okay fine, don’t buy me Boris, but buy me Particle Illusion! ”

    That’s about it.

If you boss still says no. Try playing around with a small circle flying around in a nested comp and applying Echo and/or radial blur.
