HELP – small image on display screen
New to premiere pro –
why would my project video look so small on the timeline display screen, but not on the “source” screen? In the source screen, my video fills the frame, but when I drop a clip to the timeline, the my image is a small square box in the middle of the display screen. why why why???

Hi Jim,
Is it possible you are loading an SD clip into an HD project? That is the most likely answer.
Right-click the clip on the timeline and check Scale to Frame and it should then fill the output frame.

It is an SP clip – how do I know if it’s set for HD clips? Will the scale to frame fix an SP vs. HD clip problem? Will there be a problem when I output?

Hi Jim,
When you launch Premiere, you need to choose a Project Preset to begin a New Project. Typically, you want that preset to match the footage you will be working with, for instance “DV NTSC 4:3” or “HDV 720p”, etc.
In Premiere, go to the Project Bin, usually left pane of screen, and click on the “Sequence 1” item to highlight it, then go to the top menu and choose Sequence > Sequence Settings and look at the Edit Mode and this will tell you what type of project you are in.
There is little reason to edit NTSC footage in an HD project unless the project uses primarily HD footage and you need to insert a few SD “legacy” clips into the program. In that case, Scale to Frame will expand the SD clip, though 4:3 in a 16:9 project will have black pillar bars, then you’d need to use Scale to 133% to fill out the screen.

Was there more to the solution than I can see on this thread? I’m having the same problem but, so far as I can tell, I have premier pro set to DV, which it should be. When I import a clip with On Location and double click the raw clip, it plays properly. When I bring it into Premier Pro for editing it looks fine. BUT when I export I get the postage stamp-sized video sitting in the middle of a 720 X 480 black screen.Paul

Anyone who happens to be reading this
I’ve solved (I think) my own problem. When I load Premier Pro it comes up with sequence 01 in the files panel and the timeline is also sequence 01. This was causing the problem. I couldn’t change the settings (still can’t) and it was creating a high res video which was, of course, much smaller than the lower res input. The solution was to create a new sequence (sequence 02) and set it to DV 4:3 aspect ratio. Then edit the raw footage in THAT sequence rather than sequence 01.
