Having not really used Premiere seriously from about ver6 I’m seriously considering migrating back to it having heard good things about the CS4 suite integration.

I’ve been editing on the PC with Edius and Liquid Silver and the Mac with FCP so having decided to build a new machine to run CS4 on, don’t really care which Platform.

Can I solicit opinions whether there are any advantages running CS4 production suite on a Mac v PC?

I’m happy to send reasonable £££ on a suitable system, forget storage at the moment, but would prefer a mobile solution if a suitable monitoring interface is available. I have an IoHD on my mbp FCP system currently, will that work with Prem?

    Thanks for any advice

Premiere has much more maturity on the PC side, and you are more likely to find help on that platform.

That being said, Macs have the advantage of very limited configuration options and so, in theory, you would have a more stable platform. I honestly don’t know how many resources Adobe is dedicating to the Mac vs PC platform either.

While I am a PC user and very happy with it, the Mac will give you the option to use FCP as well and may land you more opportunities if editing is your main gig.

You will also be able to import and work on existing FCP projects, something that is still very difficult to achieve on the PC side.

Finally, if you build your own machines as I do, PCs do have a huge price advantage.

Thanks for the advice Vince. Yes I do already swop material between the Macs and PCs and know the limitations.

Good point about the PC price advantage.

I’d want to run Win7 64 although I understand at present that only PS in the cs4 suite is truely 64bit.

Is this what you are running and just how stable is it on your machine/s

Yes, on Win7 64, everything is stable, although we only use a couple of recording formats, P2, AVC 100, and uncompressed for fx work.

Enclosed is a link to a white paper pdf about running CS4 apps with a 64bit system, and with extended memory use with the latest updates for CS4
    https://www.adobe.com/products/creativesuite/production/pdfs/cs4_production_premium_64bit_wp.pdf

For processor units and cores allowed with various O/S, win 7 Home premium 64bit, is allowed a single CPU with multiple cores, a i7 processor will give 8 cores, plus 16gigs of memory use, Home Premium 64bit is suited to most laptops, 1 CPU + 2 memory slots(8gig) and desktops, 1 cpu and 4 memory slots(16gig)
win 7 Pro or Ultimate 64bit allows 2 CPUs, so a mobo(server) with 2 xenon i7 cpus will give 16 cores and usually 6 or more memory slots.

I think Vince’s first post captured most of the key differences with a very even-hand.

As the link in Brian’s post indicates, 32 bit applications benefit from a 64 bit OS.

I recently explained some of this here:

    Thanks Guys, very helpful,

So it appears that if all I want is a complete CS4 collection install on a new 4core laptop (12GBram) with practically nothing else loaded on it, then Win7-home premium will allow this in 64 bit.

It’ll be primarily for XDcam Ex and HD and whatever codec works best for Fx
