  Media cache files necessary?

  The Premiere Pro CS4 I am using right now is on its way to generate a 10 GB .cfa file out of a 300 MB ac3. What the hell? What’s that for? Can’t it use it without this cache file?

  If I have to work with a dvd source that contains several ac3 audio files, do I really need 100 GB free for a 5 GB project?

  There are several types of cache files.

  First some are created from the DVD which allow long GOP footage to be previewed, then there are the preview files which are created every time you render. Depending on your preview settings, you may be rendering uncompressed files which are usually quite large.

  Finally there are audio files, again created upon indexing and preview.
