Copy and paste between different projects… and different formats
Hi all:
A few weeks ago I asked here whether you could copy and paste sequences and clips between projects, like in FCP, and I was told that yes, you can, so I did it. My source project is composed of footage shot with a Panasonic P2 (DVCPRO HD 720p), and my destination project is a DV PAL one. I select the part of the sequence that I want to copy, hit CTRL+C, open the other project, paste into the DV sequence… so far so good. Then I close the project, and when I open it again, the sound of the pasted items disappears. The sound clips are still there in the timeline, but when I play that portion of the sequence, I hear nothing, and when I double-click the sound clip, I can see that it’s empty (there’s no waveform in it). (Just to clarify: this happens only after closing and reopening the project; before that, I can hear the pasted clips perfectly).
Part of the sounds that have disappeared are audio tracks from the P2 clips, but some of them are also WAV files (sound effects) that I used in the source project, so I am not sure whether the problem is due to some bug with P2 media. Has anyone else seen this behaviour? Any solutions?
(Before I forget: this is all with Premiere CS3 (3.2.0), in Windows).

Likely a corrupted media cache. Find the folder that contains the .pek files (inside the Media Cache Files folder) and delete them, or move the entire folder to a different area.
You’ll know it worked when you see the indexing bar moving at the bottom right in Premiere.

Nope, didn’t work. The audio is audible when you load the clips into the source window; the problem happens only in the timeline.

Strange, especially if you can hear it in the source windows.
I’ve copied and pasted P2 many, many times.
Can you try putting one the clips offline, close Premiere and move the particular folder, then relink it?
Also, did you actually see Premiere re-index the files after deleting the pek files and are your timelines matching in sample rate?

Premiere did reconform the audio files again after deleting the folder in question, but no, the audio tracks in question weren’t fixed.
However, I’ve managed now to solve it in another way, as per this thread in Adobe’s forums:

Basically, I selected each of the “silent” audio tracks, did a match frame on it… and that was it. I didn’t even have to add the track again to the timeline. Simply doing a match frame seems enough for Premiere to “find” the audio. I’ve now closed and opened the program again, and… it still works (!).
I have another possible bug, relating to getting video out of the FW port in DV-sequences-with-non-DV-footage, but I’ll post it in another thread later if I can’t solve it on my own.
(BTW, if you believe the thread mentioned above, the bug is *still* in CS4…).
