  Help! (with) 3d Displacement mapping !

  I came across a tutorial here, for Adobe After Effects. Specifically, 3D displacement mapping using a plugin called FreeForm AE. I really like the effect, and have a project I could use the annimated film roll. Well, I’ve just invested in AE 7 and I don’t have that much experience. I certainly don’t have the cash any more to invest in the plug-in (Freeform AE) Lol.

  So..my question is, how can I get this effect without using a 3rd part plug-in? I know I’m asking alot, but cn ya point me in the right direction?

  Using AE without a 3rd party plugin? You can’t. It’s that simple.

  To get actual 3D depth or displacement as in the movie, you need FF or a 3D app such as Cinema 4D.

  AE deals with flat planes in a 3D space. Any “3D” effect like FF only creates a 3D “movie” that “plays” on one of AE’s layers. The only native sort-of 3D stuff that can be done in AE with no plugin is 1) extrusion using the shatter effect and 2) cylinders and spheres using the CC Cylinder and CC sphere effects.
