I’m not sure what the proper name is, but I basically want to purchase a device that is not a camera but can attach to the computer via firewire, have an insert point for a MiniDV tape and possibly a small preview window.

I digitize things that are shot on Sony and Canon cameras, so I would need a capture device that could support both these formats without problems (right now, the Sony camera cannot digitize Canon MiniDv shot tapes and vice versa).

What would you more professional individuals recommend? Also, where should I buy?

Since I’m going tapeless playback of tapes is no longer a priority item requiring a deck per’se, I’ve got rid of most tape playback related stuff except a GV-HD700, and a HV20, the GV-HD700 will playback Sony and Canon tapes recorded in 1080i, the HV20 will playback Sony and Canon 1080i, also 24p, 30p progressive recorded over 1080i and 24f, the HV20 doesn’t record 24f but the newer HV40 will.
