  Bad picture quality on export. I’m thinking it’s a settings issue? Canon Hf- s 100

  Hello,

  I seem to be having an issue with the final video quality in premiere pro. I don’t really know how to explain it but in the final video the picture is not smooth looking. Like there seems to be horizontal lines that are super pixilated when something fast happens. For example, on a close up shot, when someone blinks like pixialted looking horizontal lines appear.

  Ok, so that’s not the easiest thing to explain so I will let you know what I am using and what settings my camera are on, maybe it will be easier for someone to tell me the setting I should use to import the video files and to export them.

  I have a canon hf-s100 HD camera. In stead of right all the spec here is a link to canons site.

  But first here are the setting for the camera.

  LP (5 Mbps) 12 hours 15 minute, that’s what type of recording mode I have it in to save space on my memory card. This also means the the video is not going to display in fill 1920 x 1080 it’s going to record it at 1440 x 1080.

  Frame Rate: 24p Progressive (records at 60i)

  After reading this what do you thing I should put my import setting to?

  Also, I want this to be an HD video, and a blu-ray video. What are the two different setting I should use for the export?

  I ran into the above problem when I was exporting the video file as a h.264, which I thought was HD.

  I have heard that the videos final quality may be poor because the computer may not be able to fully handle the rendering process, which produces faults in the quality of the video which I could be getting.

  Please I really need help. I will try to figure out any information that you guys need.

  One of the problems is that you are starting with very highly compressed video, the lower the bitrate the more compressed it is, the more the images are stepped on and more artifacts are generated, if you want to make a decent blu-ray you need to use one of the higher bitrate modes like 17Mbps or 24Mbps, mem cards are inexpensive

  Thanks Brian for the fast response.

  Your thinking that it’s that simple of an issue? That will be great if it is!

  But if I want the video to look clean and clear then I need to use one of these setting on the camera your saying?

  FXP (17 Mbps) 4 hours 10 minutes – Allows 1920 x 1080 Full HD Recording
  MXP (24 Mbps) 2 hours 55 minutes – Allows 1920 x 1080 Full HD Recording

  I know that it’s saying that at these rates that it allows for full hd recording but shouldn’t all the setting be an Hd image? I know that this is getting a little off topic for Premiere but it seems the issue was I didn’t have the right settings on for my camera.

  Since I did record in the LP (5 Mbps) what export setting do you think I should use to get the picture to look perfect? I’m thinking at this point that I will not get an HD video but what do you recommend I export it as for the best picture result.

  The higher the bitrate usually the higher the quality you have to work with, here is a link to one of Adobe’s primers on compression, it might give some insight.

  Thanks for the link I was able to get through some pages tonight but I will have to pick up tomorrow as I’m getting too tired to read off my comp.

  But here is something that might help I’m think with the problem that I am having.

  Canon advertises “24p” capture with this camcorder, but notes that all modes (60i, 30p, and 24p) are actually captured as 60i. This is a source of great confusion thus far, and I am interested to learn how best to edit footage captured in one of these “pseudo-progressive” modes. Editing programs like Premiere depend on recognizing whether source material is interlaced or progressive, and it is unclear how best to handle the modes Canon is employing with this camcorder.

  I will do another test render with the higher rate that you mentioned earlier and see what I get.
