  Raid array question

  I am using pc quad core and just setting it up for editing and sfx with after effects and Premier as the main softwares.
  The Pc in question does allow for four internal drives and these can be set to raid 0 and 1 and other variations on that. Also I have seen pci 4 drive array cards. All SATA btw.
  Is it good to have two arrays one to write to and one to read from, or is that just not needed And with an external raid array of lets say two 1000 gig drives would that be slower than an internal raid array of the same specs? To just buy drives is a lot cheaper and would leave money for memory.
  While I am here I may as well ask the next part of my upgrade query. I will be using xp pro 64 bit. I can install 4 x4 gig memory sticks. What would be a recommended memory
  Specification? I will be using cs4 master suite with this set up.
