  • Premiere won’t playback AE clip w/o rendering?

Ok I have both PP CS4 and FCP 6. I am capturing AVCHD footage from a Canon HF11. Capture’s fine with both. When I take a clip and tweak it in AE I export out as Pro Res which I captured footage with in FCP. I import clip from AE and FCP it plays it with no rendering. Quite good quality too.

With premiere I import and it has a yellow line. Plays but stutters. I had to render it for smooth playback.

The key here is probably export from AE with same settings as captured from Premiere. I captured in Premiere with there AVCHD option. But in AE it doesn’t give me that option to export as a codec. So I choose pro res because quality is close enough to Animation.

Anyway around this to have it playback like FCP does immediately?

If you exported back to a lossless codec such as Quicktime animation, or uncompressed AVI (which you really should do), you will likely need some very good hardware and possibly RAID system to get playback without rendering.

On my side, I find that Quicktime animation for example needs a least a Quadcore CPU and a 3 Drive RAID 0 to consistently playback smoothly at full quality, but there are many other factors at play, including your graphics card, memory, etc.

Don’t export back to the native codec if you can avoid it as it will highly compress the footage and you final media quality will really suffer.
