  Question about using 16-bit

  If you work in After Effects in 16-bit mode, things are noticably slower than working in 8-bit mode. Is it ok to use 8-bit mode while creating your project, and then change to 16-bit mode right before you render? Are there any pitfalls to watch out for?

  That depends on what effects you are using. Many effects that change color (Hue/ Saturation, Colorama, Levels etc.) will expose severe clipping when using extreme settings in 8bpc, but will look good in 16 bpc. Similarly Blurs and Distortion effects may look different, so you should be wary. Other than that it’s quite okay to work in 8bpc and only use 16 bpc when rendering.

  Zarxrax: Bear in mind that to really take advantage of 16 bit processing, you should use a 10 bit YUV or 16 bit RGB codec. There could be slight gains for 16 bits rendering with 8 bit codecs, but not as much as with codecs that really acomodate the extra color infornation. There are plenty of standard or add-on 10/16 bits codecs in Quicktime and AVI architectures.
