I have a keyed image of a talking head. The person appears at various places, composited into a cell phone, laptop monitor, etc.

There is a very maddening problem when manipulating the image–if I leave the image at 100% scale, I can move it along the X axis, no problem. However, if I move it so much as 1 pixel on the Y axis, the rendered image gets noticeably softer when imported into my Avid.

I have other scenes where the talking head has been scaled down, turned on a Y rotation, etc., again no problem with the resolution. Help!

Must be interlaced footage. If you move intlaced footage up or down an odd number of pixels, you’ll just get AE’s interpolated pixels, which will be softer.

I wish it were that simple. Unfortunately, it doesn’t matter whether I move the image 1, 2, 20 or 35 pixels. It’s not an even/odd issue. It’s like there’s a quality switch I’m missing or something.
